Nancy Sweet Jr
Mrs. Philip W. K. Sweet Jr. (Nancy Frederick), 88, died on June 16, 2016, in Lake Forest, IL.
Mrs. Sweet was born in Danville, IL, on June 18, 1927, to Mr. and Mrs. David Arthur Frederick. She grew up in Clarence, IL, where she was educated in a two-room schoolhouse, and Paxton, IL, where her father ran the local bank. She attended the Emma Willard School in Troy, NY, and was a graduate of Wellesley College.
Mrs. Sweet and her husband, retired Northern Trust Chairman and CEO Philip W. K. Sweet Jr., lived in Lake Forest since the 1950s. She was involved with numerous non-profit organizations, including the Boys and Girls Clubs, the Chicago Symphony, the Infant Welfare Society of Chicago, the Lyric Opera Guild, and the Ravinia Festival. She also served as women’s board president of the Illinois Children’s Home and Aid Society in the 1970s, and was on the board of the Emma Willard School for many years.
Blessed with musical gifts, Mrs. Sweet loved dancing and playing the piano, and in fact met her future husband while playing songs at Wellesley. She enjoyed playing bridge, especially at the Everglades Club and the Bath and Tennis Club in Palm Beach, as well as at the Lyford Cay Club in the Bahamas. She golfed at the Onwentsia Club and Shoreacres.
Mrs. Sweet is survived by Philip, her beloved husband of 65 years. She was the loving mother of three children: her daughter, Sandra Harkness Sweet, sons P. W. Kirkland Sweet III and David A. F. Sweet, and two daughters-in-law, Carol Monek Sweet and Patricia Shields Sweet. She is also survived by her beloved grandchildren, Marilla Sweet Gedge, Stephanie Sweet Ingersoll, Stacy Sweet Patlovich, Hannah Harding Sweet, David A. F. Sweet Jr., and Philip W. K. Sweet II; and three great-grandchildren, George Kirkland Ingersoll, Henry Wright Ingersoll, and Whitford Theodore Patlovich.
