Margaret Canfield Young

Mrs. William B. Young (Margaret L. Canfield), 91, died peacefully in her sleep on January 5, 2015, in Rye, NY, from complications of Parkinson’s disease.

Mrs. Young, whose nickname was Peggy, was born on August 26, 1923 in Chestnut Hill, PA. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph M. Canfield, Jr. (Elizabeth Yost). Educated at schools in Germantown, PA, she also attended college at Briarcliff Manor and Temple University, subsequently working at a publishing company in New York and the Atlantic Refining Company in Philadelphia. Peggy married William Young in 1958; two years later, they moved to Greenwich, CT, where she became an active member of the community.

Peggy was very involved at Christ Church, Greenwich, especially with the Altar Guild, of which she was a director, chairman of the flower committee, and member of the property commission. She was also a member of the memorial garden committee, as well as president of Episcopal Church Women. Peggy served as president of the Greenwich Chaplaincy Services from 1987 to 1994, and on the board of Meals on Wheels for many years. She was passionate about her volunteer work and her faith, and devoted countless hours to them.

Peggy was a caring and thoughtful wife, mother, and grandmother. She loved to travel, was an enthusiastic and talented gardener, floral arranger, and cook, as well as a voracious reader and classical music enthusiast. She endured a long battle with Parkinson’s disease with fortitude and grace, and will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Alexander M. Dye (Louise B. Young) of New York and Westerly, RI; her son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. William B. Young, Jr. (Katherine Kelly) of New Canaan, CT; and her grandchildren Katherine McC. Dye, Alexander B. Dye, Sarah M. Young, and William B. Young III.
